SOUTH FLORIDA – Music plays a central role in Miami Carnival. South Florida Caribbean News caught up with one of Miami Carnival’s pioneering DJ, Dlife who will take center stage on Sunday, October 7, 2018.
Q: Did you always want to be a DJ?
A: As far back as I can remember yes, I always wanted to be on radio.
Q: Favorite type of music to mix or sample?
A: Soca & Afrobeats.
Q: Where do you find your new music?
A: Franchise Record Pool.
Q: What fuels your creativity? How do you fuel your own creative energy?
A: Traveling and not necessarily anywhere far but getting out and about. By staying positive at all times.
Q: Who is on your current playlist?
A: Davido, Nikki Minaj, Kiprich, Kes, A Boogie, Nailah Blackman, Popcaan, Erphaan Alves.
Q: What’s a creative accomplishment you’re particularly proud of?
A: Can I say my kids, LOL? And my first album under Penalty / Atlantic Records “ Extreme Soca Vol. 1”
Q: What are you plans for the Miami Carnival season?
A: To enjoy doing what I love to do, DJ& TV host.
Favorite Caribbean Island? – Too many to choose just one.
Favorite Caribbean dish? – Palau and Caribbean style Chinese food.
If I weren’t a DJ, I would be? ….. In some form of entertainment and technology.
Darryl “D-Life” Payne, is one of the few deejays on the cusp of this movement. Trinidadian-born and Brooklyn-raised, D-Life has “Caribbean in his blood.”
Not limited to soca, however, he has been put to the test with the best reggae and hip-hop sound systems in New York City. He played for years alongside Massive B on Hot 97. More recently, he mixed for the legendary Doug E. Fresh on 107.5 WBLS.
